Can Facebook Really Get the Whole World Online?

Smartphone-philippines

In early 2013, Facebook sent a team of Android engineers to Nigeria to test the Facebook app on local wireless networks

The group of engineers landed, bought Android phones and SIM cards, and tried to boot up the Facebook app. It didn't work. The network connection was too weak to support the app. The engineers returned home and wiped over months of work, to build a more usable version.

This visit was a wake-up call for Facebook: Global expansion requires building apps for users who don't have a mobile device with 4G capabilities. Apps for the developing world need to operate under conditions where Internet is spotty, data plans don't exist, and the new iPhone arrives years after its launch Read more...

Vine is giving its web version a much-needed makeover with new features including search, coming to the web on Thursday

Visitors to Vine.co will now be able to watch Vine videos without creating or signing into an account, an element that the old site didn't offer. Users were greeted with a login page but didn't have access to videos unless they had that videos direct URL

Of course, no private Vine videos will be accessible without a login, and users cannot revine private posts, so they should never appear on the Vine.co home screen, according to a company spokesperson Read more...

New-snapchat

Snapchat announced its biggest update yet Thursday. The company revealed it was adding text messaging, video chat and other new features that promise to take the app's photo and video sharing to the next level

But it appears that the update, which was announced on the company's blog and in a message to users from the Team Snapchat account, has yet to make it to the iPhone App Store

The message sent by the Team Snapchat account instructs users to "double tap to upgrade." Double tapping redirects users to the Snapchat app in the App Store, but for many people the update has yet to appear, prompting some to express their impatience over Twitter: Read more...

YouTube Creators Can Now Add a 3-Second Intro to All Their Videos

Youtube

YouTube has added a new feature for content creators: they can now add a 3-second intro to all their videos. The intro will automatically start on videos on their channel

To set it up, you need to upload the 3-second introductory video as an unlisted video, and then select "add a channel branding intro" on your channel's InVideo Programming page. Then you can choose which videos the intro will appear on

YouTube notes that the intros may not be used as ads, sponsorships, or product placements — they're mainly a tool to help you promote your brand Read more...

Facebook's 'Anonymous Login' is Evil Genius

F8_conference_facebook-91

Say what you like about Mark Zuckerberg, the guy is nothing if not self-aware. He knows that one of the biggest problems Facebook faces, now and in the future, is the widespread perception that it's vacuuming up all sorts of personal information about you

At the same time, he knows that Facebook's revenue stream depends almost entirely on targeted advertising, which in turn depends on — well, vacuuming up all sorts of personal information about you. What we have here is an image problem.

Time was when Zuckerberg simply told us to grow up, that there was no longer a "social norm" around privacy amongst his users. Given the amount of personal information most of us willingly enter into the social network, this was a pretty fair summary (1.3 billion users and counting can't be wrong, right?) Read more...
