F8_conference_facebook-41

Facebook will be pounding the pavement this summer in an attempt to teach its largest group of advertisers — small and medium-sized businesses — how to utilize the company's ad offerings

Facebook, along with partners like Square, Intuit QuickBooks, and LegalZoom, is planning a five-stop event tour the company calls Facebook Fit, a series of "boot camp-style events designed to help SMBs achieve business success," Facebook wrote in a blog post Tuesday

Facebook has stops planned in five major U.S. markets, and expects 500 to 700 attendees at each event, according to Dan Levy, Facebook's director of small business. The events are intended for both existing and potential advertisers, and Levy tells Mashable that the specific content may be determined by which companies sign up Read more...

Google AdSense Conspiracy Theory Angers Online Publishers

Google_thumb2

An anonymous whistleblower, claiming to be a former Google employee, came out last week and posted a scathing exposé accusing Google of banning hundreds of web publishers from its AdSense advertising system.

The leaker claims that Google underwent a massive AdSense policy change in 2009 because publishers were making too much money.

"We were told to go and look into publishers accounts, and if any publisher had accumulated earnings exceeding $5,000 and was near a payout or in the process of a payout, we were to ban the account right away and reverse the earnings back," he says.

If the accusation is true, it would mean Google has purposefully denied publishers and YouTubers payments earned through advertising and pocketed the earnings for themselves. Read more...

A Poem That Will Inspire You to Put Down Your Smartphone

Lookup

Many of us can't escape social media. In private and in public, we're glued to our smartphones — often at the expense of having a conversation with the the real, live human beings in front of us.

Writer and director Gary Turk urges everyone to put down their gadgets in his poem Look Up. The video is a touching montage of a lost young man falling in love with a woman who gives him directions, and their life together without the hindrance of social media.

The video doesn't demonize social media entirely, but rather encourages people to take a break from their online lives to experience real connections. As Turk says in the video, "Look up from your phone, shut down the display. Take in your surroundings, make the most of today. Just one real connection is all it can take to show you the difference that being there can make." Read more...

Partyparty

Police in Brampton, Canada, broke up a massive party Friday night after more than 1,500 teens showed up to a "mansion party" that had been promoted on Twitter and other social media, according to multiple reports.

The organizer reportedly hired security, and was charging a fee to get into the party, which took place in a partially built house in an upscale neighborhood

The organizer was the son of the homeowner and had permission to hold a party, but not one of that scale, Peel Regional Police told The Toronto Sun .

Can Studying Tweets Lead to Faster Earthquake Recovery?

Nicaragua-earthquake

Twitter has always been a place to talk about what's happening around you — even if what's happening is an earthquake

In March, an early morning earthquake in Los Angeles resulted in a Twitter storm of sleepy, yet humorous, tweets. That type of real-time sharing is the basis of new research out of Stanford University, where researchers recently tested Twitter's ability to accurately detect ground-shaking intensity, a metric displayed using visual graphs known as ShakeMaps

In other words, the real-time tweets led scientists to wonder — can those tweeting about an Earthquake help researchers learn more about it? Read more...
