It's unclear how many people currently have the new profile, which features larger profile and header images, new timeline views and the ability to pin a tweet to the top of a profile page. Twitter did not immediately respond to Mashable's request for comment, but based on Twitter reaction to the design change, it appears that a number of users are still using the old layout (and aren't happy about the impending switch) Read more...

Imgur Rallies to Raise $60,000 for Family of Terminally Ill Cancer Patient

Ronan

Ronan Winter likely won't live to see his daughters Keelan, 15, and Keara, 11, grow up. But the kindness of an Internet community could bring a small bit of solace to his family.

The husband and father of two girls was diagnosed with Stage IV esophageal cancer in December 2013. In six months, Winter has gone from a vibrant family man to a sliver of his former self. The story of Winter's cancer battle spread online after his niece, Courtney Russell, shared the details with heartbreaking photographs on Imgur

Russell detailed her uncle's struggle and the emotional and financial impact it has had on his family. She explains that though Winter always worked hard to provide for his wife and children, he can no longer leave his bed to work. As a result, the family has wiped out its savings to pay for medical expenses, including Keelan's and Keara's college funds Read more...

Moves App Backtracks, Shares User Data With Facebook

Moves-app

When Facebook acquired fitness tracking app Moves at the end of April, the app took a public stand against the idea that its user data would end up in the hands of the social network. "The Moves experience will continue to operate as a standalone app," the company wrote in a blog post, "and there are no plans to change that or commingle data with Facebook."

That was on April 24, less than two weeks ago. On Monday, Moves quietly updated its Privacy Policy, which can be found here. Under the new policy, the company will now share user data with affiliates — in other words, Facebook

Facebook Still Reigns Supreme Among Young Adults

Facebook-teens

Although Facebook may be losing steam with teenagers, as recent studies have claimed, young adults are still as active as ever on the social media site.

Harvard’s Institute of Politics polled over 3,000 18 to 29-year-olds, covering a wide range of topics from political affiliation to social media use. During the poll, participants were asked which social media platforms they currently had accounts for.

Surprisingly, the poll revealed that a stark majority of the participants were members of Facebook, but less than half of had accounts with other social media sites such as Twitter, Tumblr and Instagram. Read more...

Foursquare CEO on Splitting Its App: 'At First, We Thought It Was Crazy'

Dennis-crowley

Foursquare CEO Denis Crowley spoke on stage for the first time since the company's major announcement that it will split the app into two. "At first, we thought it was crazy to do this, but it makes total sense," he said.

During the New York Ideas conference in Manhattan on Tuesday, Crowley explained the initial apprehension about the split.

Last week, Foursquare announced it would launch a new app called Swarm for staying in touch with friends (and would focus on its signature check-in feature), and use the original Foursquare app for discovery. Swarm will launch next week, while the new Foursquare app will roll out over the summer, Crowley added. Read more...

The Key to Balancing Business and Personal Social Media

Instagram-2

Day in and day out, I see cases of B2B marketing blindness. The cure? Widely available social marketing medication. Sufferers should liberally apply emotional storytelling, and take a healthy dose of authenticity. It does wonders for correcting an outdated business view.

But before you self-medicate, I should warn you there is a common and potentially nasty side effect that might cloud the outlook. It's called accidental narcissism.

Brands are actively encouraging individuals to use social channels and add personality to the company's image. Social media is a great way to further brand messages, but in the spirit of authenticity, these individuals will also have to talk about their personal experiences. It's a meeting of two worlds, traditionally considered very different. Read more...
