Facebook Faces Investigation in UK Following Emotion-Manipulation Study

Facebook is facing more than just user backlash following news that the social network was purposely trying to manipulate user emotions during a 2012 experiment


The Information Commissioner’s Office (ICO), a data regulator in the United Kingdom, is investigating whether or not Facebook violated data collection laws during a user study more than two years ago, according to the Financial Times



During the study, the social network tweaked the News Feed content of nearly 700,000 users, providing some users with fewer negative terms, and others with fewer positive terms. Is the Emoji-Only Social Network for Real?

The Internet is no stranger to niche social networking. The Yo app, which simply lets you send the message "yo" to your contacts, became an Internet sensation in a matter of days. So it may come as no surprise that there are now plans for a social network that uses only emoji.


And, according to its founders, it's real. Or at least real enough to be worth a laugh.


Emoj.li is the brainchild of Matt Gray and Tom Scott, cast members of the British version of Technical Difficulties, a podcast and web show looking at the humorous side of technology. (Gray and Scott specified that the project was independent from Technical Difficulties.) Read more...

Vine Debuts 'Loop Count' to Track Total Video Views

Vine added a new metric on Tuesday so users can see just how widespread their Vine creations actually are


Vine videos now include a "Loop Count," a metric comparable to the "Views" metric used on other sites like YouTube. The count updates automatically any time the video is played, even on embeds across the web



Some loop counts will include a “+” next to them, indicating the Vine was created before April 3. This is when Vine began counting video loops, so the "+" implies that there are likely existing loops missing from the displayed total Read more...

Guests flocked to the Royal Palms Shuffleboard Club in Brooklyn on Sunday to celebrate Mashable’s fifth annual Social Media Day. This year’s event boasted hundreds of attendees throughout the afternoon and fostered good spirits at the funky, retro-themed venue.


While there, guests played shuffleboard, snapped pictures at a GIF booth, sipped on social media-themed cocktails and socialized with others passionate about our global social media revolution.
