Twitter to begin tracking which apps you download

Twitter-2

Twitter will soon start keeping tabs on the apps you download

An app update, slated to roll out to iOS users Wednesday and Android users in the next week, will add a setting that allows the social network to keep track of the apps you download, the company announced Wednesday.

The goal, Twitter says, is to provide users with a "more tailored experience." By tracking the apps people are downloading, the company can better gauge users' interests and surface better suggestions of new accounts to follow and, most importantly, more relevant ads.

The feature, which Twitter is calling "app graph," will also be used to personalize the content that appears in users' timeline from accounts they don't follow. The social network confirmed in August users would begin seeing tweets and favorites from accounts they don't follow in their timeline. It wasn't clear at the time exactly how Twitter planned to make those changes but the company says app graph will help inform those additions. Read more...

Oitnb-piper-larry

We talked digital with couple Piper Kerman and Larry Smith, who are both appearing at the upcoming Mashable Media Summit on December 5, from 2:10 - 2:40 p.m. Kerman has been lauded for the success of her memoir Orange is the New Black, which is now a hit series on Netflix. Smith has found success as the founder and editor of SMITH Magazine, and he’s also known for his Six-Word Memoir project, which is now in its eighth year.

Eventbrite - Mashable Media Summit: Formats of Creativity

Q: How has digital impacted storytelling for you?

A: Larry: I loved to work in print in the late ‘90s and early 2000s. I had an internal mission to help people tell stories and an external love for the personal story. I was always the guy deeply involved in tech culture. I edited Tom Wolfe’s personal stories. Sometimes I edited essays for unknown writers. Sometimes I wrote my own – it’s just what moved me the most. It wouldn’t have been possible to do this without digital. Digital means everyone has simple tools to tell stories. Video images on our phones is magic. We’d like to do more with video and audio - it’s simplicity Read more...

Tumblr and Pinterest now fastest-growing social platforms

Tumblr-overtakes-instagram-thumb

Earlier this year, Instagram was leading the pack as the fastest-growing social platform. Now, it's Tumblr and Pinterest, which have edged out the picture-sharing app for greatest increase in active users.

Tumblr's active users grew by 120% in the last six months, according to new stats released by the Global Web Index first spotted by TechCrunch on Tuesday. Meanwhile, Facebook's active users grew by just 2%.

Pinterest comes in behind Tumblr with a 111% growth in active users, who are users that say they've actually used the site with some regularity. Earlier this year when GWI released numbers, Instagram was on top but has dropped to third place. Of the top eight, in fact, Facebook is in last place, behind LinkedIn, Twitter, YouTube and Google+. Vloggers told to label paid-for videos before people click on them

Screen-shot-2014-11-26-at-11.06.02

LONDON — Vloggers who make promotional videos without clearly identifying that they've been paid for have been warned by the Advertising Standards Agency that they must make it clearer to the viewer

The warning comes after a BBC Newsround investigation into videos posted to YouTube by a number of UK bloggers in June who were paid by Mondelez UK to say good things about one of its brands, Oreo biscuits. A BBC journalist made a complaint to the UK ad standards body, which upheld it.

In the adjudication, published Wednesday about the five videos on YouTube, the ASA says the uploads breached the Committee of Advertising Practice code — the set of rules for advertisers in the UK. It says that the ads concerned must not appear in their current form. Read more...

10 most clichéd tweets about the weather

Thumbweather

We've always enjoyed talking about the weather, but now that Twitter's constantly at our fingertips, we like to talk about it even more.

No matter how unpredictable the weather can be, you can always predict what people will say about it. Some of these were clichés before Twitter existed (see: the 'end is nigh' tweet), but the platform has also allowed for an increased number of new complaints — like talking about the incredible, awful depth of the puddle you just stepped in.

To anyone who spends any time on Twitter, especially during a snowstorm, these clichés should be instantly recognizable. Read more...

Mashable and Street Dreams capture Coney Island in its off-season

Mashmeet

Last weekend, Mashable and Street Dreams Magazine opened up Coney Island's Luna Park for our second #MashMeet. We wanted to give our community exclusive access to a famous park in its off-season, and we're so glad we did.

From mid-afternoon to sundown, we made portraits, chased light and collaborated with Instagram's finest artists. Creativity was off the charts — using their smartphones, DSLRs, film and instant cameras, photographers found the most unique angles to shoot the same space.

Film director Joe Cavallini made an incredible video to recap the day. The overhead shots were taken with a drone camera Read more...

It's now much easier to share public tweets via DMs on Twitter

The 25 best Vine videos of 2014

Vine-thumbnaeil

Compiling the best Vine videos of 2013 was one thing. Since last year, the weird and wild universe of Vine has continued to expand in every direction between quirky personalities, up-and-coming musical talents and high-profile artists, all home-grown out of the unique format.

The 2013 release of Instagram video had some doubting whether Twitter's then-fledgling video-sharing service would even live to see the new year. Vine has established itself as a major force in social media since then. Vine-made celebrities are now regulars at red carpet events, animators and other visual talents design ads for major corporations and more major film festivals are beginning to incorporate the six-second medium. Photography has proven that streets are made for more than walking. They're meant to be followed, appreciated, captured and shared.

Facebook Groups: Now there's an app for that

Facebook_groups

Facebook is breaking out yet another feature into a standalone app

The social network rolled out Facebook Groups, an app to help users stay in touch with all of their Facebook groups and find new ones.

The app functions as a hub for everything related to groups on Facebook. Upon launching the app, users see a list of the groups they belong to, with the most frequently viewed appearing first

Though groups already existed within the main Facebook app, they are not featured prominently within the app, unless you get a notification from a group you're a part of. By breaking out the feature into a separate iOS and Android app, the company is hoping to make it easier for power users to engage with their groups Read more...
