Bar Owner Slams Tom Morello: 'Rock Stars Don't Get Special Treatment'

Tom-morello-complains

Like many Twitter users when they're upset, Rage Against the Machine guitarist Tom Morello fired off a tweet to complain about an unfavorable customer-service experience.

Morello criticized 5 Point Cafe, a small Seattle bar restaurant, for being "super rude" and "anti-worker" with the "shittiest doorman in the Northwest."

Five Point restaurant in Seattle is the WORST. Super rude & anti-worker. Shittiest doorman in the Northwest. Prick. Spread the word.

— Tom Morello (@tmorello) September 27, 2014

The tweet reached his 383,000 followers and David Meinert, the owner of 5 Point Cafe. Read more...

Ello Is No Facebook Killer

Ellounsmile

I’m afraid to say how I feel about Ello.

I’ve been in this position before. A new social media platform arrives, everyone proclaims it the next big thing and better than all that’s come before or currently exists. I look at it and feel a profound sense of meh

It’s not really Ello’s fault. The social network that seems to encourage big images, short thoughts and unthreaded conversation launched over the summer. I don’t recall hearing about it. In fact, Ello was flying way under the radar until September

A couple of weeks ago, Facebook made headlines when it began strict enforcement of a real-names policy. Turns out there are many people for whom a taken name is more than just a nom de plume, but an identity. The LGBT community, in particular, took exception to the new rule as it forced some drag queens and even transgenders to use gender names out of alignment with their own sexual identities. Ello, the Anti-Facebook, Weathers First Major Outage

Ello-screenshot

The invite-only social network Ello, which has seemingly become an overnight sensation, has also drawn enough attention to become the victim of an attack that briefly disrupted its service. But it survived its first major outage on Sunday.

Ello, which has apparently benefited from Facebook's crackdown on users who don't use their real names, was down for about 35 minutes on Sunday, starting at 4:15 p.m. ET, according to the website's status page.

The site blamed the outage on a denial of service attack — an attack method characterized by a malicious intent to deny access to users. Ello resolved the attack by blocking the responsible IP address from its servers. Read more...

Anti-Selfie Short Film Tells Us Your Behavior Makes Celebs Really Sad

Selfies-celebrity-kirsten-dunst

In today's selfie-obsessed world, a photo with any celebrity is social-media gold

Mere words in a tweet or Facebook status won't suffice, as your humblebrag will surely be met with a skeptical "pic or it didn't happen" response

Aspirational, a short film starring Kirsten Dunst for Vs. Magazine, takes an exaggerated look (we hope) at people's obsessions with taking selfies with celebrities.

"Next time you take a selfie with your favorite star, think twice — unlike the girls in this film," the video's description says.

Ello Cofounder Doesn't Think Facebook Is a Social Network

Paul-b-ello

Ello, the independent, invitation-only and ad-free social network that went viral almost overnight, is often compared to Facebook. In fact, the still nascent social network has already gained a reputation as the "anti-Facebook."

But Ello cofounder Paul Budnitz doesn't put much stock in those comparisons. In part because he thinks Facebook's users have become so commoditized that the platform stopped being a true social network long ago.

"The advertisers are the customer and the user is the product that's being bought and sold," he told Mashable "We don't see ourselves competing with them because what we're doing feels so different." Read more...

If Not Ello, Something Else: Facebook's 'Real Names' Policy Could Turn it Into Friendster

487461927

Ello doesn't really work

That much isn't surprising. The bare bones, ad-free, invite-only social network launched in March is still in beta, and evidently didn't anticipate becoming this hot this fast

There isn't a working search function. I can't find my friends, which is about a basic a function as a social network needs to have. I have to login every time I use it. My Ello feed (I'm @futureboy, naturally) has nothing but a list of people accepting my invites. There's another part of the feed called "noise," which basically looks like a cut-rate Pinterest.

What's Up With Ello, the Anti-Facebook Social Network?

Ello

By now, you've probably heard something about Ello, the ad-free, invite-only, independent social network that has seemingly gone viral over the last week.

The ad-free social network has quickly — and somewhat inexplicably — gained a reputation for being the "anti-Facebook." Which is odd, because new users tend to boast on Facebook about having scored an invite to the service.

While it's not clear what's behind the site's sudden surge in popularity (it launched in March to little fanfare), several reports have linked the rise of Ello to the recent firestorm caused by Facebook's so-called real name policy Read more...

How to Snap the Perfect Hyperlapse Selfie

Time-Lapse Selfies Are Now a Thing, Courtesy of Instagram's Hyperlapse

Selfielapse-thumbnail-new-1

If there's one app that can be credited with the rise of the selfie, it's Instagram. But now the Facebook-owned photo app is introducing a new kind of selfie — the "selfielapse."

Hyperlapse, Instagram's newest standalone app for time-lapse videos, got its first major update Thursday that allows users to shoot videos from their iPhones' front-facing cameras.

The updated app now has a small button next to the shutter that toggles between the front- and rear-facing cameras. Switching to the front camera will alert you that you are switching to "selfielapse" mode. Read more...

Vine Challenge: Use the Newest Update to Create Cool Six-Second Videos

Vine_update_vine_challenge

Vine's latest update introduced a ton of new features, the biggest of which is probably video import. iOS users can now upload any video from their camera roll directly into the app, and trim longer ones down to the six-second limit

This, of course, does not mean the good ol' days of #AllNaturalVines are over — anything but! Vine allows a combination of outside videos and footage shot in-app, so really, it opens up doors to collaboration and more creativity

You can also duplicate frames and mute the sound in individual clips, as well as preview every shot while still in shooting mode. And some of the best features happen to be things we didn't expect to see: a torch for lighting up dark rooms, a level to balance your shot, and focus lock and ghost mode on the front camera Read more...

Amazon revealed a new shopping hashtag Wednesday that allows shoppers to automatically add items to their wish list with a tweet.

After sending a tweet containing the #AmazonWishList hashtag and a link to the item (or replying to a tweet containing an Amazon link), the MyAmazon Twitter account should reply with the status of the item, including when it gets added to your list, if it's out of stock and how you can buy it.

The Collective Twitter Freakout That Was the iOS 8 Update

Ios8-twitter1

Less than a week after releasing iOS 8, Apple pushed out iOS 8.0.1 — but the update did more harm than good. iPhone users reported issues with cell signal and Apple's Touch ID, and as a result, the company pulled the download.

But it was too late. Twitter devolved into a collective panic

How to Find Your Drafts and Lists in Twitter's New iPhone App

Twitter_profile

Twitter released an iOS 8 friendly update last week that included a new profile design and interactive notifications.

But although the most noticeable change was the revamped profiles, many users are unhappy with parts of the update — largely because it changes the location of draft tweets and lists

Luckily, both are still accessible. Here's how to find them.

The change users seem to be most confused by is drafts, whose new location in the iOS app is not immediately obvious. So much so, in fact, some users seem to think the folder has been removed entirely. Read more...
