How Twitter's Engagement Growth Has Changed Over Two Years

Twitter-ipo-marketers

Twitter released its first quarter earnings report for 2014 on Tuesday, and while the social-media company beat its own earnings and revenue estimates, it failed to meet Wall Street's expectations.

Timeline views, Twitter's preferred metric for engagement, saw a 15% year-over-year growth in the first quarter, according to the report. However, the company reported a larger growth — 26% year-over-year — in the fourth quarter of 2013.

The following chart, created by Statista, illustrates how Twitter's year-over-year growth in timeline views has changed since the first quarter of 2012. Read more...

What Facebook's New Login Means for Developers

F8_conference_facebook-11

"We don't ever want anyone to be surprised with how they are sharing on Facebook," company CEO Mark Zuckerberg said during his keynote at Facebook's F8 Developer Conference on Wednesday.

Zuckerberg was referring to the social network's new login features, including anonymous login, which he said will help developers draw more users to their apps.

With the new login features, Facebook is unbundling app permissions. This means when users log in with Facebook, they will be able to control exactly which permissions they grant to apps, or log in anonymously, if the developer makes the option available. What's more, developers will have to prove to Facebook that the permissions their apps are requesting are actually necessary Read more...

Goodbye, Hoodie: Facebook Grows Up

F8_conference_facebook-9

Standing in front of thousands of Facebook developers at the company’s third F8 conference, a reflective Mark Zuckerberg, sans hoodie, spoke from the heart. He noted the social media giant’s 10th birthday in February and his impeding 30th, on May 14

Zuckerberg had taken stock of his life and loves (his wife, Facebook and philanthropy), and realized he wanted Facebook to be different. “My goal for the culture of Facebook is to build a culture of loving the people we serve that is as strong if not stronger than hacking at Facebook," he said.

Remember those words, because on Wednesday, this speech and this F8 will likely be remembered as a turning point for Zuckerberg and Facebook. It’s the day they grew up. Read more...

F8_conference_facebook-1

Only his close friends and business partners know his real email address, but for a moment it looked like Facebook CEO Mark Zuckerberg had accidentally revealed his personal email address during his presentation on Wednesday.

As Zuckerberg demonstrated a screen that allows users to choose which parts of their profiles they share with apps, an email address was clearly visible: "mz@fb.com."

One eagle-eyed journalist, Mike Isaac from Recode, posted the screenshot to his Twitter account.

Facebook Changes Its 'Move Fast and Break Things' Motto

Zuckerberg1

Facebook's mantra for developers has long been "Move Fast and Break Things." It meant that new tools and features on the platform might not be perfect, but creation speed was key, even if there were some missteps along the way.

Now, CEO Mark Zuckerberg wants to be a little more careful in getting it right the first time. As a part of his keynote presentation at the F8 Developers conference on Wednesday, he announced Facebook is now embracing the motto "Move Fast With Stable Infra."

"We used to have this famous mantra ... and the idea here is that as developers, moving quickly is so important that we were even willing to tolerate a few bugs in order to do it," Zuckerberg said. "What we realized over time is that it wasn't helping us to move faster because we had to slow down to fix these bugs was slowing us down and not improving our speed." Read more...

Facebook Improves App Permissions, Introduces Anonymous Logins

Fb-anon

At Facebook's F8 Developer Conference, Mark Zuckerberg announced that the company is improving the way Facebook apps handle access permissions

Users will be able to decide what permissions they want to give to an app before signing-up and logging in.

Moreover, Facebook announced Anonymous Login, a new way for users to try out and log into apps. Users can now log into apps without handing over their information as a way to see if it's something they want to use or not.

Anonymous Login isn't totally anonymous — Facebook will know who you are — but the app maker won't. That's good because it means users can login anonymously across devices and applications. Read more...

Facebook's F8 Conference: What to Expect

F8-2011

You can expect one major theme at Facebook's F8 Developer Conference on Wednesday: Mobile. It'll be so central that we should probably say: MOBILE.

It's the first time since 2011 that Facebook has hosted an F8 conference, and a lot has changed for the company since then. Most notably, Facebook and the majority of its developers are no longer building apps for web — they are now building apps for mobile, the platform used by the majority of Facebook users worldwide

As if on cue, Facebook announced 1 billion monthly active users on mobile last week during the company's Q1 earnings call, and mobile expansion will be key to Facebook's long-term growth strategy. Mobile advertising now makes up 59% of Facebook's total ad revenue, up from 30% one year ago Read more...

Create With Tools and Mechanical Joints for Our Vine Challenge

Mechanicalmash

For this week's Mashable Vine Challenge, craft a six-second video using tools and mechanical joints. Stop-motion and live-action Vineographer Andrew Smith, owner of the Derp Vine account, will be our guest host.

Smith grew up in the mountains of northern Utah, a place he still happily calls home. He creates kinetic and mechanical sculptures for a living. "I consider myself lucky to be able to do what I love," he said. "Creating art is just fun, pure and simple. I love the joy of raw creativity; of being able to make something from nothing."

Smith first heard about Vine from a friend. At that time, he had just finished constructing a small character, Derp, for another project. "My friend suggested I use Vine to create some animations with Derp," he said. "I had never animated before, but it came pretty naturally." Read more...

Facebook Adds In-App Camera, Video Sharing to Messenger

Facebook_messenger-102

A new update to Facebook's standalone messaging app, Messenger, on Monday includes a new camera option for taking photos within the app. A camera icon above the keyboard surfaces the phone's camera, which can also be flipped for front-facing photos (selfies!).

The photo is both captured and sent with just one click

Users can still send photos the old-fashioned way within the app by attaching an existing photo from their camera roll, but the new in-app camera allows users to do so without having to leave a conversation. Users can also upload and send videos from the camera roll, a feature that was unavailable before Monday's update Read more...
