11% of the #NoFilter Pics on Instagram Are Posers

Sweetlife-concert

Your Instagram friends may not be the photographers they're making themselves out to be.

Turns out that 11% of photos using the #nofilter hashtag on Instagram actually have a filter, a percentage that adds up to roughly 8.6 million photos

The data was pulled by Spredfast, a social-media marketing company and Facebook ad partner that gathered the information from the social network's public API. This API information includes filter data, and Spredfast tested the last 100,000 images that included the #nofliter hashtag to get a sample from the platform. Read more...

The World Cup Is Facebook's Most-Talked-About Event Ever

Neymar-luiz

Few companies are enjoying the World Cup more than Facebook

The social network announced on Monday that the World Cup has generated more than one billion interactions on the site, making it the largest event — sports or otherwise — in Facebook history

Those interactions, which include Likes, comments and posts on the platform, were generated by 220 million Facebook users. Despite the tournament's popularity, that's still only 17% of the Facebook's total user base

The World Cup has dwarfed other popular Facebook moments from the past year. Despite multiple weeks of conversation, the Winter Olympics in Sochi generated just 120 million interactions from 45 million people. The Super Bowl generated 185 million interactions from 50 million people Read more...

7 Times Facebook Activity Got People Into Legal Trouble

Facebook

Spending time on Facebook could earn you time behind bars

Just ask Mark Zuckerberg — the site's founder and CEO has seen many a lawsuit thanks to his global platform. There was that time the Winklevoss twins sued him for the site's ownership, and the class action lawsuit that claimed Facebook read user messages. There's even a new lawsuit claiming Zuckerberg lets his company's directors pay themselves too much

However, e-citizens of the Facebook world don't let Zuckerberg have all the fun. Plenty of people have engaged in dubious activity that has netted them lawsuits and jail time Read more...

No, Facebook Home Isn't Dead (Yet)

Fb-home

Much of the original engineering team that created Facebook Home, including product director Adam Mosseri, is no longer working on the Android launcher app, according to a report that called the app's future into question

A Facebook spokesperson told Mashable that the company is still offering Home, and has a team "dedicated to supporting it." However, the spokesperson did not comment on specific individuals on Facebook's engineering team

CEO Mark Zuckerberg made headlines earlier this year when he confirmed Facebook would be releasing more standalone apps in the near future. True to his word, the company has already debuted two new ones in 2014: news reader app Paper and ephemeral-messaging client Slingshot Read more...

Facebook Responds to Negative Reactions to Its Experiment on Users

Fb87707a

The furor surrounding Facebook's decision to conduct an experiment that secretly manipulated the News Feed of some users to study emotion contagion reached a peak this weekend, with many calling the act creepy at best, and downright unethical at worst

Although the editor of the study recently admitted to being "a little creeped out" by the way in which the study was conducted, Facebook itself had not offered any detailed comment on the matter — until now

In a public post on Facebook, one of the co-authors of the study, Adam D. I. Kramer, a member of Facebook's Core Data Science Team, finally responded to the study's critics Read more...

Dutch Airline Sparks Anger Over World Cup Tweet

Klm

Welcome to the latest episode of stupid brand tweets, World Cup edition.

Sunday's social media gaffe comes to us courtesy of The Netherlands' Royal Dutch Airlines, also known as KLM. The airline felt the need to kick Mexican fans when they were down, posting a racially insensitive tweet soon after the Dutch World Cup squad stormed from behind in the final minutes of its match against Mexico to knock them from the tournament

It's Adios Amigo to @KLM's Adios Amigos tweet. The company has now deleted it http://bitly.com/1mL32Vf

Anger Builds Over Facebook's Emotion-Manipulation Study

Facebook1

A recently published study that manipulated Facebook News Feeds has sparked outrage among users who are criticizing the ethics behind the experiment, which was conducted by Facebook and several universities.

Researchers tweaked the feeds of 689,003 users to show a disproportionate number of positive or negative statuses for one week in January 2012. They found that the emotions of others on your News Feed can affect your mood, and published the results in the journal PNAS (Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences). However, the researchers did not inform users that they were manipulating News Feeds, and many questioned the study's ethics Read more...

A Gift to Google+ on Its Third Birthday: No More Facebook Comparisons

Google-plus

Google+ turns 3 years old on Saturday, a birthday the service is celebrating with little fanfare (if at all)

Google didn't make any major announcements or release any special features to commemorate the moment. Google+ didn't even rate an appearance at Google I/O, the company's biggest tech conference, which wrapped up on Thursday

Google, for whatever reason, seems to be content to let the event pass. The birthday is just happening: another year older, another year wiser. That's why I believe Google+ deserves a special gift from the rest of us: Let's stop comparing it to Facebook Read more...

Most people use two to three social media networks. And though Facebook ranks as the most popular, it's also the network that people say they could live without

Mashable asked 4,700 people from 120 countries about their social media habits — from favorite platforms, to number of networks — in an effort to understand how we use these tools in 2014. Our effort is in celebration of our fifth annual Social Media Day, which is on June 30. All of the results are illustrated in the video above.

I Almost Won the First $500k Winner-Takes-All Open Basketball Tournament

Bonner-parker9

I felt like I had been hit by a truck. My left calf twitched, an unrelenting ache lived somewhere within my right ankle, and the thought of stairs made me quiver. I fidgeted on my barstool unable to escape the discomfort.

We were driving back to New Hampshire following an overtime loss in the semi-finals of The Basketball Tournament (TBT), a startup 32-team, single-elimination, $500,000 winner-takes-all tournament in Philadelphia. The first of its kind. And the finals are Saturday.

We exited 95 in New Haven, Connecticut and stopped at the first sports bar we could find. Game Two of the Spurs vs. Heat series was on — my brother (Matt Bonner) was playing on the biggest stage basketball has to offer, the NBA Finals. Meanwhile, I tried to make sense of the past month: temporarily escaping my sedentary office lifestyle to play in one of the most unique, bizarre and mind-boggling basketball tournaments few but hardcore basketball fans even knew about Read more...

The 10 Most Passive-Aggressive Things You're Doing on Social Media

Passiveaggressive2

Being a source of negative energy on social media is more than just starting arguments, posting unappealing content and being a generally unpleasant person.

In fact, you may not realize that what you're doing is maddening to those subjected to see it.

Here are 10 ways you could be ruining your social media presence without even knowing it

1. The sub-post

Talking about someone behind his back isn't new, and neither is doing it in a place where he can hear it. Naturally, this prime method of passive-aggressive behavior has translated to social media — through the sub-post Read more...

Should I Yo? A Guide to Proper Yotocol

Yo2

It is one of the greatest questions of our time: Yo or no?

The inanely simple messaging app Yo has raised — or perhaps lowered — the bar on conversation by allowing you to send a single word to your contacts with one click. For those who haven't already guessed, that one word is "yo." That's it. That's all you're allowed to say.

It's good news for those who have trouble starting a conversation, or are just incredibly lazy. But when you're unsure about when to send a Yo, it's tough to know what's acceptable in every situation. Is it ok to Yo? Probably not. Read more...
